How to Find Every Photo on Your Windows PC

Use File Explorer and Microsoft Photos to locate image files scattered across a Windows computer, including important limitations and safe organisation steps.
Photographs often become scattered across a Windows PC. They may be stored in Pictures, Downloads, Desktop, Documents, OneDrive, email attachment folders, messaging application folders, phone-import folders, external drives, old user profiles or project folders.
Windows File Explorer can search across an entire PC and display image files from many different locations in one results view. The user does not need to remember the original folder name.
But the results may contain much more than personal photography, and some locations or cloud files may not appear depending on indexing, permissions and synchronisation settings.
The central point
Windows can show you where the images are, but it cannot decide which ones matter to you.

Where Windows stores photos
Image files may be located in many places on a typical Windows computer:
- C:\Users\[name]\Pictures — the default Pictures folder
- Desktop — files saved or dragged to the desktop
- Downloads — images downloaded from websites, emails or applications
- Documents — images saved alongside documents or exports
- OneDrive\Pictures and OneDrive\Camera Roll
- Saved email attachment folders
- Imported phone or camera folders
- Scanner output folders
- Screenshot folders (including Windows + PrtSc default location)
- Application project folders
- Shared business drives or Teams-synchronised libraries
- External USB drives (if connected)
- Other Windows user profiles on the same PC
- Network locations (if available)
Some folders may have been redirected by an organisation’s IT policy, synchronised with OneDrive, moved to a second drive, protected by permissions, or created by a specific application. Not every computer uses the same folder structure.
The fastest way to search the whole PC
On most current Windows 11 systems, the following method will search all locally available locations from one starting point:

An important step
Start from This PC. Otherwise, Windows may search only the folder you currently have open.
On most systems, “kind:=picture” works reliably in the current File Explorer search box. However, search behaviour can vary between Windows builds, update states and indexing configurations. If the search returns no results or behaves unexpectedly, the alternative extension searches described below may help.
What the search may find
Depending on the Windows configuration and installed image codecs, results for “kind:=picture” may include: JPEG (.jpg, .jpeg), PNG (.png), GIF (.gif), BMP (.bmp), TIFF (.tif, .tiff), HEIC (.heic — iPhone photos), WebP (.webp), and icon files (.ico). Camera RAW formats may appear if suitable codecs are installed. Screenshots, scanned documents, downloaded graphics, logos and application resources may also appear.
“Picture” is a Windows file classification, not a guarantee that every visual file type will be included. Some specialist image formats may not be recognised as pictures on every system. SVG files, for example, may not appear in all configurations.
Alternative searches by file extension
If the broad picture search is incomplete, users can search for individual formats instead. Type the following into the File Explorer search box from This PC:

Searching only for JPEG files will miss photographs saved in HEIC, PNG, RAW and other formats. Use the broad kind:=picture search first, then supplement with extension searches if needed.
How to sort and review the results
After the search completes, switch to Details view (View menu → Details) to see useful columns. Right-click the column headers to add extra columns such as Folder path, Dimensions and Date taken if they are not already visible.

Metadata may be missing, incorrect, stripped during sharing or affected by time-zone settings. Date taken is generally the most useful for identifying personal photographs, but it should not be treated as definitive.
How to open the original file location
Search results are references to the existing files — they are not duplicate copies. Moving or deleting a result from the search view affects the original file in its original location.

Using the Microsoft Photos app
Microsoft Photos provides a more visual way to browse image files from configured locations. Open it from the Start menu or by double-clicking an image file. The Gallery shows images from folders that Photos has been set up to include.
To add or remove folders in Photos: open Photos, select the three-dot menu or Settings, and look for the option to manage folder sources. Photos can include OneDrive, iCloud (where iCloud for Windows is installed and connected) and local folders.
Photos allows browsing by date, searching by filename or available metadata, and on compatible Copilot+ PCs, semantic photo search by description.
When to use each tool
File Explorer is usually better for finding where files live; Photos is often better for browsing what they contain.
Microsoft Photos does not automatically search every folder on every drive. It shows content only from the folders and cloud accounts it has been configured to include.
Copilot+ PCs: semantic photo search
Compatible Copilot+ PCs running a supported Windows 11 version may support natural-language photo search inside the Microsoft Photos app. This allows searches based on a description rather than a filename, such as “beach sunset”, “conference stand” or “dog in the garden”.
Semantic search uses local AI processing on the device rather than sending images to the cloud. Availability depends on the specific hardware, current Windows version and feature rollout status. Not every Windows 11 PC supports this feature — it requires compatible hardware and a recent software update.
The difference
Traditional File Explorer search finds files by their properties. Semantic search attempts to find images by what they appear to contain.
For most users on most hardware, the File Explorer kind:=picture search described above remains the primary method. Semantic search is a useful additional capability for those with compatible equipment.
OneDrive and iCloud photos
Photos may exist in several states depending on cloud-synchronisation settings:
- Fully downloaded local files — stored on the PC and available without internet access
- Synchronised cloud files — stored both locally and in the cloud
- Online-only placeholders — visible in File Explorer but stored only in the cloud
- Files visible through the Photos app from a connected account
- Files accessible only through a browser or the cloud service
OneDrive files show their synchronisation status through icon overlays in File Explorer. A cloud icon indicates the file is online only. A green tick indicates the file is available locally. A solid green circle indicates the file is set to always be kept on this device. Check current Microsoft documentation for the latest icon descriptions, as these may change with Windows updates.
Online-only files may still appear in a File Explorer picture search, but attempting to open one will prompt OneDrive to download it. This behaviour depends on internet connection, account status and synchronisation health.
For iCloud photos on Windows: the Microsoft Photos app can integrate with iCloud where iCloud for Windows is installed and the Apple account is connected. iCloud availability and local file status can affect which photos appear and whether they can be opened.
Do not disconnect or resynchronise cloud accounts to perform a search without first confirming that the data is safely stored elsewhere.
Why some images may be missing
If expected photographs do not appear in the search results, possible reasons include:
- The wrong starting folder was used — search from This PC, not a specific folder
- The drive containing the images is disconnected
- A network share is currently unavailable
- The folder is excluded from Windows Search indexing
- The search is still running on a large or non-indexed drive
- Folder permissions prevent access
- The file is online only in OneDrive or another cloud service
- The file uses an unsupported or unrecognised extension
- The image is stored inside an archive or compressed file
- The image is inside an email database rather than saved as a separate file
- The file belongs to another Windows user profile with separate permissions
- The photograph exists only on a phone that is not connected
- The file has been deleted from the PC
- The file is hidden
- Windows Search has an indexing problem on the specific folder or drive
Why unexpected images appear
A whole-PC search may reveal many image files that are not personal photographs:
- Website graphics downloaded by the browser
- Programme icons and application images
- Logos from installed software
- Thumbnails and cached images
- Email signatures containing logos
- Scanned receipts or documents
- Document illustrations
- Exported reports containing charts
- Game assets
- Temporary files created by applications
The key distinction
The search answers “Which files look like images?” rather than “Which files are photographs I care about?”
What not to delete
Do not bulk-delete image search results merely because you do not recognise them.
Do not delete an image file merely because its filename is unfamiliar, it is small, it appears several times, it is inside a programme folder, it is stored in AppData, it appears to be a logo, it is in a synchronised folder, it has an old date, it is shown as online only, it belongs to another Windows user or it appears in a shared business folder.
Investigate before deleting files from: C:\Windows, Program Files, ProgramData, AppData, application installation folders, website project folders, shared OneDrive folders, Teams or SharePoint synchronised libraries, another user’s profile, or accounting, legal, or CRM export folders.
The safety principle
A whole-PC image search is a discovery tool, not a safe bulk-deletion list.
Duplicate photographs
Apparent duplicates may be exact copies, resized or compressed versions, edited versions, thumbnails, cloud-sync conflict copies, originals and exports in different formats, or photos with the same filename but different content.
Before treating any two files as duplicates, compare their file size, image dimensions, folder location, date taken, and open both to verify the content. Retain originals in their current locations until a backup has been confirmed.
The duplicate warning
Two files with the same name are not necessarily duplicates, and two exact duplicates may have completely different names.
How to organise the photos safely
- 1Create a clearly named destination folder before moving anything

How to back up the photos
Before reorganising or deleting anything, confirm that important images are backed up. The 3-2-1 principle offers a practical starting point:
- Keep three copies of important files
- Store them on two different types of storage or in two different locations
- Keep one copy separate from the PC — either offsite or in the cloud
Practical options include OneDrive, another reputable cloud backup service, an external drive kept separate from the main PC, a managed business backup, a NAS with separate backup, or an offline copy.
Synchronisation is not always backup
If deleting a file on the PC also deletes it from the cloud, synchronisation alone may not provide the protection you expect.
A permanently connected external drive provides a second copy, but if it shares the same power supply, location or synchronisation behaviour as the PC, it may not protect against the most common risks. A genuinely separate location — cloud, offsite or managed backup — provides stronger protection.

Practical business implications
Business images often become scattered
Marketing photographs, product images, screenshots and scanned documents may be saved wherever employees happened to be working at the time. A whole-PC search can reveal the extent of this scatter and make the case for a more structured approach.
Search results may reveal data-governance problems
Client images, scanned contracts or confidential documents may be found in personal folders, Downloads or other unapproved locations. This can indicate an absence of clear storage policies or user awareness.
Cloud synchronisation can cause confusion
A file visible in File Explorer may not be fully stored locally. Attempting to open, move or share an online-only file unexpectedly may trigger a download, cause an error or result in an incomplete copy being created.
Duplicates consume storage
Multiple copies of large image files can accumulate gradually across folders, backups, exports and cloud services. However, careless deduplication can remove originals, delete required project assets or break links in documents and websites.
File names may contain personal information
Search results and screenshot filenames may contain names, dates, reference numbers or other personal information. Reviewing and sharing search results should be handled carefully to avoid inadvertent data exposure.
Backup should precede reorganisation
Attempting to tidy up image storage without a confirmed backup first means any mistake — an accidental deletion, a failed move or a cloud-sync conflict — may be unrecoverable.
The broader lesson
The search may begin as a housekeeping exercise and end by revealing where the business lacks clear storage and retention rules.

Searching non-indexed locations takes longer because Windows must scan the files directly rather than using a pre-built database. How do I rebuild the Windows Search index?
Go to Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows, scroll down and select Advanced indexing options. In the Indexing Options window, select Advanced and then Rebuild. Can Copilot+ PCs search photos by description?

The feature is not available on all Windows 11 PCs and requires specific hardware.
Does deleting a OneDrive photo also delete it from the cloud?
Usually yes, unless cloud-only deletion or version history is available. When a file in a OneDrive-synchronised folder is deleted on the PC, OneDrive typically removes it from the cloud too, after a brief delay. OneDrive does provide a recycle bin and version history for a limited period, but this is not a substitute for a separate backup. Always confirm backup before deleting synchronised files.

Windows Search scope and indexing
Search behaviour depends on: the starting location selected in File Explorer, local drive availability and health, user permissions, indexing scope and configuration, file handler registration, cloud-files provider synchronisation state, network-share availability and Windows Search service health.
Indexed search uses the Windows Search database and returns results much faster. Non-indexed search scans the target location directly and can take considerably longer, particularly on large or slow drives.
In Windows 11, indexing can be reviewed and managed at Settings → Privacy & security → Searching Windows. Two modes are available: Classic indexing (indexed locations plus non-indexed areas searched slowly) and Enhanced indexing (broader coverage including the full drive). Enhanced indexing can improve search coverage but may use additional CPU, memory and battery during initial indexing. Consider the performance implications before enabling it on shared or resource-constrained devices.
Do not recommend that organisations index highly sensitive locations, such as legal archives or patient records, without assessing performance, privacy and multi-user access implications.
Advanced Query Syntax
Windows Search supports Advanced Query Syntax for more precise queries. Useful tested properties in current File Explorer include:

Only include properties that work reliably in the current environment. AQS syntax has varied between Windows versions and some operators from older documentation no longer behave as expected.
OneDrive Files On-Demand
OneDrive Files On-Demand allows files to appear in File Explorer as online-only placeholders without consuming local disk space. Three states are relevant: online-only (cloud icon, no local copy), locally available (green tick, local copy present) and always on this device (solid green circle, pinned locally). Placeholders may appear in search results but will attempt to download when opened.
Bulk “Always keep on this device” changes can consume substantial disk space. Do not change Files On-Demand settings on managed devices merely to perform one search without checking available storage and policy implications.
Shared OneDrive libraries synchronised from SharePoint or Teams may include files uploaded by other users. Search results from This PC may include this shared content if it is synchronised locally.
Business data-governance review
When an image search reveals company content in uncontrolled locations, consider reviewing: OneDrive Known Folder Move configuration (to redirect Desktop, Documents and Pictures into managed OneDrive folders), SharePoint document libraries for business-critical image assets, Teams-connected storage for marketing or project images, local profile storage policies, shared drive permissions, Microsoft Purview retention and sensitivity labels where appropriate, endpoint backup coverage, user offboarding procedures (to handle images stored in departing users’ profiles), acceptable-use policy for personal versus business storage, image copyright and consent requirements, and secure disposal procedures for confidential images.
PowerShell image inventory
For environments where a comprehensive image inventory is required, PowerShell can enumerate image files across a drive or share. A read-only approach using Get-ChildItem with an -Include filter for common image extensions can produce a CSV export.
