O2 has extended a satellite-to-phone service to business customers. The important business point is not the novelty of connecting to space, but the resilience question: what happens when the normal mobile network disappears?

We've all seen it. You drive into the countryside, glance at your phone and discover: No Service.

For most of mobile phone history, that has simply been something we accepted. No mast nearby meant no mobile connection.

That is starting to change. O2 has extended a satellite connectivity service to business customers, allowing compatible ordinary smartphones to connect directly to satellites when the normal O2 network is unavailable.

This is not really a story about phones talking to space. It is a story about another route to communicate when the usual route disappears.

You do not need a satellite phone

Traditional satellite communications generally meant specialist equipment: large satellite phones, dedicated terminals and separate services.

O2 Satellite uses Starlink's Direct to Cell technology. O2 says that a compatible smartphone can connect automatically when it cannot find the terrestrial O2 network and satellite coverage is available. You do not manually point the phone towards space.

That does not mean every phone can use it. Device support, service settings and the provider's current offer still matter. A business should check its actual handsets and tariff before assuming the feature is available.

Do not cancel your broadband just yet

Satellite-to-phone connectivity does not suddenly give you fibre broadband wherever you happen to stand. O2 describes the current service around basic connectivity and selected supported applications, including messaging, maps, weather information and location sharing.

O2's reported app support includes services such as WhatsApp, Messenger, Google Maps and BBC Weather, but availability can vary by handset and platform. Businesses should verify the current list rather than assume that every application will work.

Think basic connectivity when there otherwise would not be any, not gigabit broadband from space. Messages may take time, and the service is not a substitute for dependable broadband or every type of business communication.

The service also works best outdoors with a clear view of the sky. O2's current information says the service is limited to particular conditions and does not guarantee a connection everywhere. That matters if the work happens inside buildings, under cover or in difficult terrain.

The interesting word is resilience

Imagine you have employees:

  • visiting customers in rural areas
  • travelling between sites
  • working on construction projects
  • making deliveries
  • maintaining remote equipment
  • working on farms or estates
  • attending incidents away from normal infrastructure

Mobile coverage may be part of how those people communicate, navigate, authenticate or access information. Satellite connectivity adds another possible route.

When the mast is unavailable

That is useful in a remote location, provided the device, service and conditions support it.

There is another possibility too. If a local cellular outage affects the normal mobile route, a satellite option may provide limited backup for messages or supported applications. That is where the service becomes more than a rural coverage story.

What happens when the normal connection fails?

Businesses already spend time thinking about resilience. What happens if:

the broadband fails → the electricity fails → Microsoft 365 is unavailable → the server stops → the mobile network disappears

The sensible answer is not to make everything impossible to break. It is to have another way of working.

  • two internet connections
  • cloud backup
  • mobile failover
  • offline copies of important information
  • clear check-in procedures for field staff
  • a tested alternative when terrestrial mobile coverage disappears

Satellite-to-phone connectivity may become one part of that plan for some businesses. It should not become the whole plan.

This is already moving beyond the consumer market

O2 has positioned the service for people working beyond ordinary mobile coverage, including business users who need to exchange small but important pieces of information from remote sites.

The point is not that every phone can now do everything from anywhere. The point is that an ordinary handset may be able to send a message or share a location in a place where it previously could not communicate at all.

Do not buy technology because it sounds clever

This does not mean every business suddenly needs satellite connectivity. Ask the boring question first:

“What problem would it solve?”

If your staff spend their entire working lives in central Manchester with reliable connectivity, probably not much. If engineers regularly disappear into rural mobile blackspots, that is different.

If losing communications during an outage would create a genuine business problem, test the service with a small group of employees using their normal phones and applications. Record whether messages arrive quickly enough and whether the service works in the locations that matter.

Also check the cost of compatible handsets, tariffs and any service limits. A low monthly add-on may be less significant than replacing devices or moving employees to different plans.

Satellite connectivity is becoming another option in the resilience toolbox. It is not a guarantee of coverage everywhere, a replacement for broadband or a substitute for a proper continuity plan.

The useful question is not:

“Should we buy satellite mobile?”

It is:

“What happens to our business when the normal connection disappears?”

If the answer is “we stop”, you have found the problem worth looking at.
