The Camera in the Room Might Not Look Like a Camera Anymore

An app called Zuckoff can alert people when it detects Bluetooth signals associated with nearby smart glasses. It cannot tell whether the glasses are recording. The more useful business lesson is broader: policies for confidential spaces should be based on what a device can do, not what it looks like.
A new app can alert you when certain Meta smart glasses are nearby. That sounds slightly paranoid until you remember that smart glasses can contain a camera that looks very much like an ordinary pair of glasses.
That creates a workplace problem worth thinking about. Not because somebody wearing smart glasses is necessarily recording, but because the device may be capable of recording without looking like a traditional camera.
First, what does the app actually do?
The app is called Zuckoff. It listens for Bluetooth signals associated with devices such as Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and alerts the user when it thinks a pair is nearby. It may also estimate roughly how close the device is.
Zuckoff detects a device signal, not recording activity. An alert does not prove somebody is filming you, and no alert does not prove that no recording-capable device is nearby.
That makes it an awareness tool rather than a magic camera detector. It can tell you that a known type of device may be present. It cannot tell you what the person wearing it is doing.
Why does this matter?
For years, recording equipment has usually been fairly obvious. Someone points a phone at you. A laptop camera is sitting in front of them. A CCTV camera is fixed to the wall.
Smart glasses change the visual clue. Someone could be sitting opposite you in a meeting wearing what appears to be an ordinary pair of glasses. They might simply be wearing them. They could be listening to music, using an accessibility feature or taking a call. They could also potentially be recording.
Unless you recognise the device and understand its indicators, you may have no idea what it is capable of. That uncertainty is the business issue.
Visible indicators help, but they are not a complete policy
Meta says its glasses include a visible light intended to indicate when photos or video are being captured. Meta also says that covering or disabling the light disables the camera.
That is useful product design. But a workplace rule cannot rely on everybody in a room:
- noticing the light
- knowing what the light means
- recognising the glasses
- understanding what the device can do
- feeling comfortable challenging the wearer
It is also easy to imagine devices from other manufacturers using different designs, signals or indicators. A policy tied to one brand will age quickly.
This is really a workplace policy problem
Imagine some ordinary business situations:
- a solicitor meeting a client
- an HR disciplinary meeting
- a doctor's consultation
- a board meeting discussing redundancies
- someone working on confidential product designs
- a screen displaying customer records
- a conversation involving financial information
Now put somebody wearing camera-equipped glasses into that room. Suddenly an existing rule such as “no photography” may not be enough. Staff might not even realise that a camera or microphone is present.
The same question applies to visitors, contractors and customers. A receptionist may be trained to ask someone not to take a photograph, but may not know how to discuss a device that looks like normal eyewear.
You probably do not need a smart-glasses detector
For most businesses, installing an app to scan every meeting room for Meta glasses would probably be excessive. The more useful response is simpler: decide what your rules are and make sure people understand them.
Examples of capability-based rules
Recording devices are not permitted during confidential meetings without prior permission.
Camera-enabled smart glasses must be removed or disabled in restricted areas.
Visitors must follow the same recording-device rule as employees when entering a confidential space.
The wording should apply to the capability, not a particular brand. Today it might be Meta glasses. Tomorrow it might be another pair of glasses, earbuds, a badge, a pendant or a device that has not been designed yet.
Do not accidentally ban useful technology either
Smart glasses are not simply covert cameras. They can also provide:
- hands-free calling
- audio
- AI assistance
- navigation
- accessibility support
A blanket ban everywhere may therefore make little sense. A better approach is to define the situations where recording or live audio creates a genuine risk, then apply proportionate controls there.
That is the same practical principle businesses already use for phones, USB devices, visitor access and confidential documents: control the risk in the situation where it matters, rather than banning every device in every place.
Technology keeps making old policies obsolete
Many company policies were written around what technology looked like at the time. Phones were phones. Cameras were cameras. Computers were computers.
Those boundaries are disappearing. Your glasses can now be a:
Capability line
camera → microphone → speaker → computer → AI assistant
The device form factor tells you less than it used to. A policy that says “no cameras” may not help if people do not know what counts as a camera. A policy that says “no recording-capable devices in this confidential meeting without permission” is easier to understand and more likely to survive the next product launch.
Write the rule around the situation
- 1List the rooms, meetings and workflows where an unnoticed camera or microphone would create a genuine problem.
- 2Decide which device capabilities are restricted there: recording, live audio, image capture, AI assistance or access to other systems.
- 3Write a short rule that applies to employees, visitors and contractors.
- 4Explain how someone asks for permission and what to do when they are unsure.
- 5Review the rule when new devices or new ways of working appear.
That approach does not assume bad intent. It gives people a clear way to protect confidential conversations while leaving room for legitimate accessibility and productivity uses elsewhere.

The useful question is not:
“Do we allow Meta smart glasses?”
It is:
“Where in our business would an unnoticed camera or microphone create a problem?”
