Gemini can phone businesses—but its first trial is US-only

Google's Gemini Apps feature Call for me can ring a business to ask about routine details such as opening hours, stock, quotes or appointments. As of 1 October 2026, the early rollout is limited to eligible US users and US numbers. This article explains what the feature does, how it differs from Google's other automated calling programmes, and what a receiving business can sensibly consider without inventing new legal duties.

Imagine answering the phone at a shop, salon or repair business and discovering that the caller is not the customer. It is the customer's AI assistant, checking an appointment or asking whether something is in stock.

That scenario is no longer purely hypothetical. Google has introduced a Gemini Apps feature called Call for me, also described in its terms as Agentic Calling. The important qualification for UK businesses is that its first rollout is limited to the United States.

What Call for me actually does

An eligible user can ask Gemini to call a business for routine information or a simple task. Google's examples include checking opening hours, product availability, service quotes, appointments and reservations. The system can navigate telephone menus and wait on hold, so the person does not have to stay on the line for the whole call.

Google says the user reviews the number and the information Gemini will share before the call is made. The user can follow a live transcript, listen in, stop the call or take over. At the start, Gemini identifies itself as a Google AI assistant and says the line is recorded. That disclosure is part of this product's call flow; it is not a promise that every automated caller from every supplier will behave the same way.

There are limits. Google warns that the assistant can misunderstand a response and does not guarantee that a task will be completed. Its terms restrict the feature to personal use, not use on behalf of a business, and exclude tasks such as financial transactions and certain sensitive or high-risk requests. A caller saying that Gemini has booked something is not a substitute for checking whether the booking reached your own system.

The first trial is not for UK users

As of 1 October 2026, Google's help page describes a gradual early rollout for adults in the US using a Pixel 11 with a US SIM, a Google AI subscription and the Phone by Google Public Beta app. The device language must be English, and the feature can call US numbers only. Google says it may not yet be available to every otherwise-eligible user.

So this is not evidence that an ordinary UK customer can currently send Gemini to ring a UK business. A UK business does not need to change its phone system or write a new script because of this announcement alone. Businesses that serve US customers may still want to understand how the trial works, but the eligibility limits should stay attached to every description of it.

Do not mix it up with Google's other calls

Google has also described other automated business-calling features through Search, AI Mode and Business Profile. Those are separate services, with their own availability, settings and routes into a business. A setting that affects one programme should not be assumed to control Call for me, and an example from a Search feature does not show that Gemini Apps can call a UK number.

What should a receiving business think about?

For the person answering the call, the useful question is not whether an AI voice sounds unusual. It is whether the request can be handled correctly through the business's normal process.

  • Can staff confirm opening hours, prices or public product information in the same way they would for a person?
  • If a caller asks for a booking or change, who is authorised to make it and where should the final entry be recorded?
  • What details are genuinely needed to answer the question, and what should remain private?
  • How should a staff member respond if the request is unclear, unusual or outside the normal process?
  • Who can confirm the result if the assistant appears to have misunderstood or the call drops?

These are sensible service-design questions, not new legal rules. A business can decide, for example, that staff may answer general enquiries but should confirm a consequential booking in the ordinary booking system. If the details do not make sense, a brief clarification or a human callback is more useful than guessing what the AI meant.

What happens when an AI calls another AI?

There is a mildly comic possibility that a customer's assistant will spend several minutes negotiating with a business's automated phone menu. The more practical question is whether that chain ends with the right answer, appointment or quote.

A voice assistant can navigate menus and wait on hold, but it can still misunderstand speech, confuse dates or fail to complete a task. A second automated system may make those hand-offs harder to follow. Clear confirmation, a usable record and a route to a person matter more than whether both sides are powered by AI.

For now, understand the boundary

Google's Call for me is a limited US preview, not a new UK way for every customer to contact every business. There is nothing a UK SME needs to buy or switch on today. If automated callers become relevant to your market, keep your existing process for checking bookings, quotes and customer details, and make sure staff can move an unclear request to a human.

Plain-English Takeaway

Gemini can make a limited set of routine calls for some US users, but it is not a UK customer channel yet; if a request arrives through an automated caller, confirm the outcome in your normal business system.
